As part of Greater Anglia’s £60 million network-wide refurbishment and redevelopment they required station improvements, enhancing public spaces across their network. This included a new signing system, interior and exterior decoration and landscaping.

The challenge was to create consistency throughout the network, at the time, Greater Anglia had over 150 stations and there was an array of architecture styles, from listed historic to modern buildings, each with their own requirements. It was clear that upkeep of these stations had become overwhelming. Faded and non-maintained buildings meant navigation for blind and partially sighted users was challenging, particularly around these complicated stations.

A new signing system was developed, designed to be affordable to manufacture, and adhere to British and Network Rail standards.

An exterior paint scheme was designed, flexible enough to create a brand presence in all architectural styles whilst ensuring maintenance would be minimal. Painting was highly contrasted where necessary so the architecture would not be a barrier for visually impaired passengers.

Internally the same decorative principles were applied and guidelines for flooring and furnishings. Externally, planting and landscaping recommendations were included, encouraging a consistency across the network, creating year-round interest, increasing biodiversity and with low maintenance plants.

The guidelines went on to be used for Abellio’s other franchises, West Midlands Railway, London Northwestern Railway and Scot Rail.
