Built in Manchester’s up and coming NOMA quarter, The Co-operative’s Head Office is set out over 16 floors (approx 30,500 meters sq) and used by 3,000 employees. The building’s aim was to provide a modern working environment and facilities allowing freedom for flexible working by its staff. At time of completion the building was awarded the highest BREEAM rating, 95.1%

Almost every room in the building had a distinct brand presence which meant that there were thousands of artworks. Each one had to be manuafactured and correctly installed. Above ground the building was set out similarly from floor to floor, but below ground it was a maze.

Flexible working meant that department locations could move therefore, any wayfinding system would have to adapt. Some departments handled sensitive information and in this open plan office security was a challenge.

Within the main office spaces, navigation and arrival signs had removable magnetic panels which were affordable and quick to update. Departments change floors at a moments notice. A systematic and organised approach to manufacturing and installing products meant that the 7,000 + signs, products and artworks could be implemented on time and in the correct location.
